Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival
The World famous lake, Inle: which is surrounded by the
hills and it is situated about 900 meters above the sea
level where different kinds of orchids are blossom all
the year round is not only famous for its legs rowers
but also famous for Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda festival,
celebrate in every year during the months of September/
October. Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, one of the state's
holiest sites, from the first day of the waxing moon to
the third day after the full moon of Thadingyut
(September / October). The focus of the large two storey
sanctuary is five goldleaf-covered statues, of which
three are said to be Buddha images, while the remaining
two are reportedly Arahats (historical disciples of the
Buddha). The goldleaf on the figures has become so thick
that it's hard to tell what the figures
represent; they
look a bit like short, squat bowling pins or lopsided
dumbbells. The statues were reportedly fashioned during
the reign of King Alaungsithu (1112-67). The gold lumps
are so holy that pilgrims rub red strips of cloth
against them, and then tie the cloth strips to their
bikes, cars and trucks to create protective spiritual
forcefields around themselves and their vehicles. During
the 20 days of the festival, a ceremonial barge carries
four of the five Phaung Daw Oo images around the lake,
from village to village, to bless the village
monasteries.

Naga Festival
Naga
nationals living near Hkamti are sort of becoming
Myanmarised, and conversant with Myanmar language.
Mostly they live in the mountains and valleys in the
northwest of Myanmar. Nagas are mainly found in the
four townships; Lahe, Layshi, Hkamti and Nanyun. The
New Year Festival of Nagas has a great attraction
both for Locals and Foreigners. The Naga New Year
falls in the middle of January after the harvest. It
is celebrated from 14th to 15th January. It is the
time for them to welcome visitors, to
share the joy and happiness with friends and guests
at this auspicious time. During this New Year
festival you will be busy shaking hands with Naga
warriors wearing hats made from bear fur, wild boar
tusks, hornbill feathers, and tiger claws. Some also
have tiger fangs hanging from their necklaces. This
expedition involves a crossing wild pristine forests
and tribal villages where civilization has almost
never touched.

Taungbyone
(Nat) Festival
Taungbyone
is a small town north of Mandalay. The bigger
ceremonies of the spirits (supernatural beings that
reward believers) in Taungbyone are held annually,
mostly during the season of Warkhaung (August). The
aim is after all to “make the Spirits happy” in
order to put them in a generous mood to grant
favours and fulfill wishes. This event is visited by
all those who worship ‘Nat’, especially the traders
and merchants who want help for more profits. It is
interesting how devotees of the Spirits have
integrated ‘Nat’ worship into their practice of
Buddhism.

Thingyan
Water Festival
Myanmar
New Year usually falls during (13th to 16th April)
and celebrated all over the country. The word
Thingyan itself means a change. The old year passes
away and the New Year takes place. As the year
changes, everybody also expects to get a changed of
live, change of position, for his prosperous and
cheerful life ahead. Everybody hates unclean and
dirty stuffs of the old year and wishes to start his
life with newly attractive and pleasing things.
Myanmar people observe Thingyan in a variety of
ways. For the
young,
this is the time of fun, to go around splashing
water on every passerby or drive around town to
visit the water throwing pandals. Splashing water on
each other is a wonderful way of let off steam, to
ease any simmering anger and resentment and as the
festival falls right in middle of summer, a most
refreshing way to cool off. During this festival
almost everywhere offers of food and drinks to
whoever comes from four directions. Food and other
necessities are offered also to monks. Some people
stay and sleep at the monastery to keep Sabbath and
meditation.
